Tour Description Escape the traffic and crowds by exploring the back streets which lead us to hidden piazzas, small churches, rustic fountains and much much more. This private tour covers periods from Ancient, Medieval, Renaissances, right up to Baroque providing a great overview on how the city came to be how it is today.
Beginning in the Jewish Ghetto our guide will show you the Portico d' Octavia and the Theater of Marcello while revealing a Jewish Roman culture which has existed for thousands of years. Passing the outside of the great Synagogue of Rome we walk over bridge 'Ponte Fabrico', your stomach may turn knowing that this bridge was built in the 1st BC and is still in use today. On the Roman boat shaped island (Isola Tiberina) we learn about the island's history, legends and why one of medicines most famous of symbols come from this island. Crossing into Trastevere [tras-TEH-ve-ray] we continue down narrow picturesque cobbled stone streets and begin to see the colorful Rome that you picture in your mind.
Around 2700 years ago, the area of Trastevere was mainly inhabited by 'hostile' Etruscans (as opposed to the well mannered friendly Romans on the opposite bank of the river). It is truly amazing, but still today you can see a very distinguished difference in appearance, mannerisms and speech in these locals, and this is where the real Rome comes to life!
On this private tour we will also visit the Church of San Cristogono which is often overlooked by visitors. This present day structure itself is quite wonderful but there is much more to be discovered than meets the eye. The magic of the church lays beneath present day street level where we find art and artifacts dating back to the earliest days of Christianity in Rome.
We then make our way to the Church of 'Santa Maria in Trastevere'. Once the most important church it Rome, its magnificent interior contains some of the finest mosaics in the city to conclude the tour just in time for lunch. Most guests prefer to stay in the area of Trastevere after the tour as there are plenty of great local places to sit, eat and people watch. However, you are only minutes away from the Gianicolo Hill which offers magnificent views of both the Vatican City and the City of Rome.
